Snow Sculpture in the Dark Sponsors and Info

Snow Sculpture in the Dark

Loveland’s fourth Annual Snow Sculpture in the Dark, the Colorado Snow Sculpture National Qualifier, will take place Feb. 10 – Feb. 15 in downtown Loveland. The five-day snow-sculpting event will feature internationally recognized snow sculpting teams from across the state of Colorado including Breckenridge, Arvada and northern Colorado. The winning team from Snow Sculpture in the Dark will become Team Colorado and represent the state at the national competition in 2015.

All snow sculptures will be showcased along 4th Street from Cleveland Avenue to Garfield Avenue Each team, made up of three sculptors each, must hand carve their snow creations from a basic 8’ x 8’ snow block. A panel of juried judges as well as the community will judge final sculptures in several categories. The winner will be announced the evening of Sat. Feb. 15.

Snow sculpture is an art form practiced outdoors, and is even considered performance art in the eyes of some. The materials and tools vary, but frequently consist of hand tools such as shovels and hatchets. Snow sculptures are typically carved out of a single block of snow weighing roughly 10 - 30 tons. The snow is tightly packed into a form after having been created by artificial means or collected after a snowfall.

A snow stomping party will be held on February 10th to help prepare the snow for the snow sculpting competition and teams begin sculpting on February 11.  Snow sculpting will occur from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. each day February 11 – 15, culminating in judging and “People’s Choice voting” Saturday. Thursday, February 13th is Dine Around Night featuring the sculpting teams in downtown Loveland.  Pourhouse Bar & Grill, Henry's, Cactus Grille, Next Door, Mo'Betta, 4th Street Chophouse & Generations will each be hosting a team for dinner.  Art enthusiasts are invited to meet, greet and eat with the sculptors.  This is a unique opportunity to interact with the artists-- autograph signing, picture taking, and learning more about the snow sculpting process.  Dining starts around 6 PM.
